II Congress of Mediterranean Aquaculture · II Symposium of Aquaculture of Catalonia · Technical sessions of the Exporàpita

I think that has been a success to seize the opportunity of the II Congress of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean to fit the II Symposium of Aquaculture of Catalonia.

The fact that we can count with researchers from the Reference Network in Aquaculture and fisheries of the Generalitat of Catalonia represents an added value that will allow us to have more communication, more participation of experts, more transfer, and, in short, more level in the conclusions.

All and all we say that aquaculture has a future, and that is true but also we have a long way to run since the weak points are.

We are currently on a global stage with many challenges; challenges that have each one of them their own caseload and in need of answers.

The process of global warming, population growth, the need for a healthy diet they put us in a dichotomy that we cannot dodge: we do produce in a sustainable way and we must provide a healthy diet for the population. This is not easy, aquaculture must be placed in an optimal position for the fish protein is healthy and necessary and we all know that extractive fishing is immersed in a series of questions that will be resolved with more sustainability, which is the same as reducing the fishing effort.

Aquaculture has to go to more but we need more research, more technology transfer and more resources. We will have to combine productivity responsible with a reasonable business. Researchers and entrepreneurs to speak clearly.

I am confident with these days, with the people involved and with the importance of the conclusions that will be carried out.

La Ràpita is already a benchmark in the topics of aquaculture. I congratulate the organizers and I encourage you to not lose heart. They are doing a great service to your Country and your people.
